Windex Outdoor All-In-One

My mom told me that this tool did a great job on outside windows, so I borrowed it for some of our hard-to-reach ones that can’t be cleaned by tilting them in, and it worked amazingly well! I highly recommend using this for an easy way to clean outdoor windows!

Realtor.com App

iPhone Screenshot 5

I love this free app for house hunting! It’s a nice quick way to keep tabs on the latest houses that go on the market via my iPhone!

We have an appointment with our real estate agent this Friday! So our house should be up for sale very soon!!! All of the little projects and the deep cleaning is almost done! Now I’ll just have to pull my hair out trying to keep everything in perfect condition with two young kids and a dog!

Have a great week!

A Reading Break!

2 Aug

Since time is in extra short supply lately, I haven’t had as much time to write as I’d like, let alone read other blogs! So, I’m taking a little break this Friday to catch up on some posts from bloggers I love, like…

Patty, who just got back from World Youth Day with the Pope in Rio,

and

Stephanie, who just moved from Michigan to Florida on extremely short notice for her husband’s job while 38 weeks pregnant,

and

Olivia, who will be adjusting to her husband working every weekend while he attends classes starting this fall,

and

Stephanie, who is feeling blessed and joyful even though she just moved and a job opportunity fell through while she is six months pregnant!

If you don’t follow these ladies already, please check out their blogs! Also, check out the bottom of my site for more blogs that I love! I’m constantly updating my blogroll, as there are so many great people out there sharing amazing things!  And there are even more that I follow that aren’t listed below. Be sure to check back soon as there will likely be a few more additions!

Have a great weekend! Hopefully our house will be on the market in about a week!

Dear NFP, Let’s Be Honest.

23 Jul

rings

Dear Natural Family Planning,

Let’s be honest.

Sometimes I don’t like you. You frustrate me.

Like when I was so worried about getting pregnant right after the birth of my second daughter, that my husband and I didn’t get close, if you know what I mean, for about five months. Needless to say, this was not a fun time.

Or how my cycles have a very short infertile timeframe each month.

I hate how ignorant the majority of the medical community is about you. Sometimes it makes me feel embarrassed, like when the OB/GYN’s nurse asked me if you were like the Rhythm method. Or, even though my doctor knows I’m using you, she still tells me at my follow-up delivery appt. to use a condom until my period returns to make sure I don’t come back into her office with a surprise pregnancy.

But you know what, NFP? More than you (or rather, factors surrounding you i.e., my lack of knowledge, my body, others) frustrate me, I’m so thankful for you!

I feel blessed that my husband and I cherish and value the time we get together. I know that our odds for separation decrease significantly because we use you. I know that we’re being open to life if that is God’s will, even though we’re not trying to have another baby at this time.

I’m grateful that I’m not putting any life-destroying chemicals in my body that could also cause serious health complications and even my death. I am confident in knowing what’s normal for my body and would be able to detect any unusual changes or symptoms. I also know that if Adam and I feel that God is calling us to have another child in the future, it will be easier for us to achieve pregnancy. Thank you for being a method that embraces my femininity instead of trying to suppress it!

I’m thankful for people who have been able to develop methods using science and technology for more peace of mind. You are definitely not the rhythm method! I want to use you accurately (which, thanks to using the Marquette model, has been easier than ever), so that I can show people that you are good, smart, and 99% effective at avoiding pregancy. But as much as I want to do that, I’d know that a baby conceived during a typically infertile time would be a miracle and blessing from God.

I’ve been blessed with two beautiful little girls, who I can’t imagine my life without! Neither one was necessarily deliberately planned, especially the youngest due to a wonderful “mistake” on my part. (I should have waited the more conservative four days after peak day instead of three to assume Phase 3 – Thank the Lord, I didn’t!)

I wish more people were aware of, and open to, your goodness and benefits. God’s way is never easy, but it is certainly freeing! Thanks, NFP, for teaching my husband and I how to be more selfless.

With much appreciation and loyalty,

Stefanie

five-favorites-moxie-wife-1

This is going to be one quick Five Favorites post, but I’m happy to be joining Hallie and the other fabulous ladies who are linking-up! I’m in the middle of getting our house ready to go on the market, so time for blogging is in short supply right now! Here goes…

Edy’s Outshine Creamy Coconut Fruit Bars

Creamy Coconut

I wasn’t sure what I would think about coconut bars at first, but these are perfect on a hot summer day! Yum!

{2}

 The Cost of Discipleship

I’ve been a huge Dietrich Bonhoeffer fan ever since reading Eric Metaxas’ biography, Bonhoeffer, last year. I’ve just started to read this well-known book by Bonhoeffer, thanks to my dad who surprised me with it a few weeks ago! We’ll see how much time I actually have to read now that we’re busy getting our home ready to sell!

{3}

Prepare Your Home for Sale Checklist

I’m in the midst of de-cluttering, storing, and cleaning! I decided I better make sure I’m not forgetting anything, so I found this great checklist! It would work great for spring cleaning, too! Not that doing all of these things are my favorites, but I’m all about checklists!

{4}

 Noteshelf App

iPad Screenshot 4

I love this iPad app. It’s great for creating a variety of notebooks for all different purposes. You can type, draw, highlight, etc. I downloaded it when it was on sale for $1.99. Right now it costs $5.99, so you may want to wait for a sale. I haven’t used MagicalPad yet, but it seems to be pretty similar and is FREE!

Chicken Bow-Tie Pasta Salad

Chicken Bow-Tie Pasta Salad recipe

This is a Kraft recipe, but I actually didn’t use anything Kraft-brand to make it! (Boo Kraft! I’m not a big fan ever since I started trying to be more conscious of incorporating more preservative-free foods in my family’s diet.) My husband grilled a whole bunch of chicken breasts for me last week, so I used those in this great pasta dish! It’s really quick to make and can be eaten warm or cold. It’s a great summer meal or side dish!

Have a great week, everyone!

What if the Grass Isn’t Greener?

12 Jul

road stock photo

Have you ever read or heard something and felt like it was written or spoken just for you?

I had that experience yesterday morning when I opened up my daily 3 Things for Mom post in my inbox. Lisa Hendey was Thursday’s contributor and what she wrote in the first few paragraphs really resonated with me.

“Never leave one good party in search of another,” was one of the bits of wisdom my parents passed along to me before I left home for college. “The party down the hall isn’t any more fun than the one you’re already enjoying.”

My Mom and Daddy were always the life of any party, the first onto the dance floor and the last to leave it, the first to RSVP and the last to hug the host goodbye at the end of the night. Their wholesome “partying” is an example of the rest of their commitment to living life fully.

It turns out that this bit of wisdom works well for many of life’s other circumstances too: for career, for investments, and for marriage and family life.

Click here to read the rest of Lisa’s post.

The reason this spoke to me so much yesterday, is because Adam and I are contemplating putting our house on the market. An unexpected blessing this week nudged us to take this idea more seriously – and we are.

The thing is, though, that we are really happy. Life is good. We love our family. We know that we are blessed and despite some minor frustrations, like neighbors who park their cars in their yards, we are filled with joy everyday.

Adam and I are trying to be objective about this whole selling/buying thing. Ideally, it would be nice to live in a better, newer neighborhood where there are sidewalks for the girls, everyone keeps their yards properly maintained, and cars aren’t speeding by. Now is probably the time to buy before interest rates climb back to where they were.

So, the plan is to spruce the house up as quickly as possible and get it ready to list by the end of the month. We’ll see if we can get an offer that meets our bottom line. If not, we’ll probably just stay put, as we really aren’t under any pressure to move.

My worry, though, is that we’ll sell, and then not be able to find a house that meets our needs and wants in our price range. We also don’t want to be greedy, as if we are not grateful for the home that we have lived in for five years.

What if the grass isn’t greener on the other side? What if this party is better? When do you know if it’s better to stay put or if it’s time to step out in faith?

I’ll keep you posted… 🙂

Getting to Know… You {Temperament Link-Up}

Temperament Tuesday Link Up

I’m a little late to the Temperament Tuesday link-up with Olivia at To The Heights! Better late than never, though, right?!

I was behind in reading blogs this week and took some time Friday night to catch up, but didn’t get very far once I discovered this fun little party! I love personality tests and gaining insight into what makes people tick!

I’m already a big fan of the Enneagram – it consists of 9 personality types. I’m a Number 1 – The Reformer. It fits me pretty perfectly. My husband, Adam, is a Number 9 – The Peacemaker.

Anyway, for more about the four temperaments (Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine, and Phlegmatic), why they matter, and to take the test yourself, read Olivia’s post!

I read The Temperament God Gave Your Kids last year. While reading, I also tried to think about what temperament(s) described me. The only one I was for sure able to rule out was the Sanguine temperament. I’m way too organized and introverted for that temperament! So, yeah, when I saw Olivia’s link-up about this test I got really excited about nailing down some answers- it’s the little things in life!

I took all of the different temperament tests that Olivia suggested and I got mixed results! One told me that I was a Choleric-Phlegmatic, and another said I was just Phlegmatic. So, I decided to buckle down and create a temporary CatholicMatch profile so I could access their temperament test. I actually wrote in the mandatory profile blurb that I was just joining for the personality test and I’m married and love my life! (I deleted my account when I was done!)

Back to the test, The first time I took it, I was a Melancholic-Phlegmatic, but it didn’t quite seem to fit, so then I took it again and it said I was a Melancholic-Choleric, so I think I’m a combo of the three, because just two of these together don’t completely seem to cover me!

I think the Melancholic/Choleric write-up on CatholicMatch describes me pretty well, overall, except that I’m not really that moody, untrusting, and easily discouraged. (The Phlegmatic side of me, is that I can be easy going when I need to be and I try to avoid conflict if at all possible!) Here’s what it says…

The melancholic-choleric is also a leader with the potential to accomplish great works. However, where the choleric-melancholic is driven by the challenge and the opportunity, the melancholic-choleric is inspired more by the nobility of the task. The introverted nature of the melancholic, combined with the focused and unempathic nature of the choleric, can result in an individual who is highly motivated by noble ideals (even humanitarian ones), but who prefers to work alone, rather than with people. The melancholic side of both temperament mixtures results in the project being organized, ethical, and high-minded, while the choleric aspect is the driving and demanding force.

If you are melancholic-choleric, you are somewhat less pragmatic (or utilitarian) than a pure choleric, just as persevering and determined, and with a greater emphasis on the ideal. Likely to be motivated by the most noble and demanding of causes, you are capable of founding a humanitarian society, composing a symphony, founding a school, or discovering a cure. You are organized, perfectionist, introspective, driven, and moody (though less so than a pure melancholic). You will be less active than a choleric-melancholic and less extraverted, more internally focused.

But your weaknesses include a tendency to excessive self-criticism and criticism of others, being dismissive or overly judgmental, exhibiting a tendency to self-absorption, and possessing an untrustful and controlling nature. You tend to be inflexible, can bear grudges for a long time and may be prone to discouragement. A melancholic-choleric who is not attentive to his spiritual life, and does not keep his eye assiduously on the truly important things of life can become a cross to those around him, through his nit-picking, perfectionism, disdain, bitterness, resentfulness, spitefulness when crossed, and even haughtiness.

I’m pretty sure Adam is a Phlegmatic/Sanguine or Sanguine/Phlegmatic. They both describe him pretty darn well, and I think he’d agree! Maybe I should have him make a temporary CatholicMatch profile so he can take the test, too! 🙂

Thanks, Olivia, for this fun and insightful opportunity! Considering I didn’t have time for my usual Friday morning post this week, being able to join this link-up was perfect!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A Reflection on 8 Years of Marriage

25 Jun

6-25-05

The above photo is one of my favorites! Adam and I were so happy to share this special day with so many of our close friends and family members! I remember not wanting to leave the next day to drive from Indiana down to Tennessee, because it was so wonderful to be around so many people I loved at one time! Occasions like this must be a small taste of what heaven will be like!

Today marks our 8th wedding anniversary! Here we are – a dog, a conversion, a house, two kids, and a 30th birthday later! AND HAPPIER THAN EVER! We truly feel so blessed to have been called to this vocation. We’ve had to go through growing pains, just like any couple does, especially in the first few years and when adjusting to the life-altering event of a first child! We’ve yelled, thrown things, cried, rolled our eyes, and slept on the edges of our beds as far apart as possible… There have been plenty of moments that we’re not proud of, but we have come through every challenge and emerged closer and stronger because of them!

It’s amazing how much things improved when we began TRULY putting God at the center of our marriage and surrendered our will to His! We mutually sacrificed more for each other and the good of our family. (It’s interesting how kids quickly change our priorities for the better, huh?! We’re forced to be selfless and re-examine our lives!) We started focusing on daily blessings and treasuring small moments. Joy has multiplied in our family in recent months!

A couple years ago, we both began journeys of seeking out God’s will and really being open to whatever He asks of us. I started devouring life-changing books about inspirational and faithful people with great wisdom! (I currently have quite a stack on my bedroom dresser waiting to be tackled!) I asked God to help me with my quickness to anger towards Adam, and you know what? He did! I’m happy to say that God’s grace has shaped me into a much more understanding and positive wife!

Adam began facing a lot of family hurt that had kept him in an emotional prison. He buried his former vision of his fantasy music career and started asking God how his talents should be used in the context of keeping his family his main priority. He started listening to Catholic radio again and watching impactful documentaries. He read (listened to) Wild at Heart by John Eldredge. Adam has grown into a joy-filled man full of confidence and conviction.

It has been eight years of chiseling and sharpening each other for heaven! It is a tragedy that so many couples abandon their vows before they experience the joy of a bond made stronger after facing adversity with forgiveness, faith, and hope. God-willing, eight years is just the beginning of our married journey! We know there are many years of change and challenge ahead (and probably some more eye-rolling on my part!), but with God at the center our love will endure!

Happy Anniversary, Baby!

Present in His Presence

21 Jun

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

Relaxing peacefully on a lime green float in my parents’ pool, I felt the cool water flow between my fingers and the soft breeze ruffle my hair. The birds chirped, tweeted, and sang around me. I had just begun thinking about how nice it was to escape during my daughters’ nap-time to quietly enjoy the gift of nature, when I suddenly felt the warmth of the sun on my face. It was as if the clouds parted just for me and God was saying, “I’m here.”

This was a rare moment of serenity, and I soaked up every bit of it! I don’t get many opportunities to “sit in the classroom of silence,” as author Matthew Kelly says. During this hour-long vacation, it was easy to be fully present and experience God.

What’s not so easy, though, is being aware of God’s presence in the rush of everyday life.

The very next morning after my blissful time in the pool, it was back to reality! I was getting ready for work in the morning, when my four-year-old, “C”, had a meltdown in the hallway because she wasn’t able to open “Little A’s” bedroom door and say “Good morning.” “Little A” had woken up before “C” and was already eating breakfast and watching Caillou on the iPad. As I walked into the kitchen to try to calm her down, I noticed that the floor had been splattered with soggy cereal and milk due to a bowl that was dumped off of the high chair tray. Shortly after cleaning this up, I had to toss “Little A’s” favorite blanket and stained pink “Baby” in the washing machine. This resulted in crying and frustration on her part.

During this chaotic morning, I realized that God is present right now, too. This thought – this truth – allowed me to have more patience and empathy than I probably would have been able to muster otherwise.

The more aware we are of God’s presence, especially in everyday situations, the more we will be able to handle things gracefully and respond to promptings from the Holy Spirit. We are more likely to focus on relationships and not distractions. The more we live fully in the present, the more we are aware of God’s blessings. And as I discussed in last week’s post, the more thankful we are, the more joy we radiate!

How have you noticed God being present in your life today?!

MAKE UP FOR EVER 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

MAKE UP FOR EVER - 5 Camouflage Cream Palette

I usually don’t spend a lot of money on makeup, but one of my must-have items is this concealer pallete. I bought it nearly a year ago and will still be able to get several more months of use out of it! I love how all of the colors are in one compact – salmon to neutralize under eye circles, green for red areas and blemishes, and skin tone shades. There are some great YouTube tutorials out there and those videos are actually what convinced me to invest in this product. I’m glad I did!

PB&J Smoothie

Recipe: PB&J Smoothie - 100 Days of Real Food

This recipe is delish! It sounds kind of weird at first, but it is one of the best smoothies that I’ve had! My husband thought it was a little too peanut butter-y for his taste, but I had no problem with it! My girls loved it, too! I even snuck some spinach in there and it still tasted amazing!

{3}

Clearblue Fertility Monitor

I’ve been doing Natural Family Planning now for about eight years. Two years ago, after my second daughter was born, I decided to invest in the Clearblue Fertility Monitor as an extra measure to make sure I was reading my signs of fertility and infertility correctly. I am pretty aware of my bodily symptoms, but sometimes I’d forget to take my temperature at a certain time or whatever and my chart would be a little incomplete. I love that there is a three-hour window each morning to, er, tinkle on a stick so it can check hormone levels. I’m sure several women reading the post are familiar with this, but for more information on how to use this product for NFP, check out the Marquette Model.

The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic

The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic

I’m currently reading this book by Matthew Kelly, one of my favorite authors/speakers! I love what he is doing with The Dynamic Catholic Institute! Anyway, I’m about halfway through the book and there are so many great passages worth highlighting, as is common with many of his books! I really love what he has to say about prayer. I’ve been reading/listening to some great stuff on prayer lately and plan to do a post in the near future about this essential element of pursuing God’s will!

Speaking of prayer, here is a great visual metaphor…

Have a great week!

Being Joyful on Purpose (Despite Neighbors and Old Cars)!

14 Jun
grand am

First day of my senior year of high school with my new car! My bro was a lucky freshman who got to ride with me instead of on the bus!

Some days I want to move. I want to live in a neighborhood where people don’t park their cars in the front yard. I’m sick of fixing one thing after another on this house. I’m tired of vacuuming every day because my pomeranian’s hair is all over the place.

I can’t wait to buy a new (to me) car. One where the dashboard isn’t curling up from years of being parked out under the sun, the side door doesn’t have a dent from accidentally scraping against a fire hydrant, and the front passenger window isn’t taped up to prevent it from sliding down due to some weird electrical issue that’s been fixed twice already.

I wish I had more money. Not an obnoxious amount – just enough to feel like an unexpected crisis is going to put us back to square one of rebuilding our emergency savings. And enough to buy a decent used mini-van or SUV when my 13-year-old Grand Am decides it’s been driven too many miles.

I’m sure I could go on about all of the things that are lacking in my life and complain about from time to time, but I’m going to choose not to because I prefer (most days) to focus on the many blessings I have in my life – the special relationships, priceless moments, and undeserved gifts.

Just last evening alone, I experienced so many blessings. After work, I went to my parents’ house to pick up my daughters from an afternoon swimming lesson at their pool. My parents had just made dinner, which was perfect because I was hungrier than usual and was afraid that if I didn’t eat soon my patience would wear thin with the girls. When I sat down to join everybody else who was almost done eating, my two-year-old reminded me to pray! So cute, as she’s just learning to make the sign-of-the-cross and say grace before meals right now!

On the way home, my husband called to FaceTime with my four-year-old. Every night that my husband works, they always communicate via FaceTime before she goes to bed! And each night, including last night, “C” won’t let him off the phone until they both kiss their screens at the same time and hug their phones. Can you say A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E?!

And if that wasn’t adorable enough, when I walked into “C’s” room to get her ready for bed I found her standing at her dresser with her hands folded looking at a framed photo of her Daddy holding her when she was a baby. I asked her what she was doing and “C” said, “I’m praying for Daddy.” I asked her what she was praying for and she said, “I’m praying that he comes back to me and I want him to know that I’ll always love him.” MELT MY HEART! It was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!

After precious cuddle time and big kisses and hugs, “C” and I even peeked out the window to watch the fireflies before she fell asleep. Then, later in the evening, I received this text from my husband- “Thanks for loving me :)”. These moments refresh me and make the vocation of marriage and raising a family so joy-filled. It may seem like just an average night, but how sad it would be if I were to dismiss and overlook all of these blessings!

Maybe I paid extra attention to these moments last night, because on Wednesday afternoon a beloved longtime co-worker lost her husband to a massive heart attack. It’s times like these when our priorities are really put into perspective and we cling a little tighter to what who matters. I want to be able to look back some each day and feel grateful that I soaked up precious time with those I love and didn’t hold anything back. I want to know that I sacrificed, gave too many hugs to count, said “I love you” a million times, and brought joy to others because I lived my own life joyfully, on purpose.

I love my house. I love that we live in a nice town so close to the lake, several parks, and my parents’. I love that my girls have nice rooms and warm beds to sleep in. I love that we have a finished basement with plenty of room for them to play and my husband has his own studio. I love that we only have one full bath – one less shower to clean! I love that we have a fenced-in backyard for Princess.

I’m grateful that my car has lasted this long. It was paid for by my parents and despite several cosmetic weaknesses, it has ran great which is what counts the most!

I’m thankful that God has provided what we have needed. It seems like anytime we get a bonus or some extra money, it goes straight to pay for a repair or a medical bill, but I know that is just what we needed at the right time! I’m thankful for our jobs. My husband and I are able to spend as much time with our young girls as possible and still provide for our family’s needs. We’ll never be able to get this time back with them and we know how much every moment counts.

A thankful heart is the key to joy. And this joy is all because of Him!

Have a great weekend, and live life intentionally TODAY!
