I’ve been looking at your first quote today. “Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God’s will.” That was not Bonhoeffer, but his biographer, Eric Metaxas, who said that.

The alleged George Washington quotation “Make sure you are doing what God wants you to do–then do it with all your strength” first appeared in February 2010 when it was posted online by somebody calling himself “The Ignorant Fisherman”. It is not found anywhere in Washington’s writings, nor does anybody claim to have heard him say it. It does not appear to be a paraphrase of anything Washington said either, though some people have professed to see a similarity between it and his famous words to the Lenape leaders: “You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are.” Personally, I don’t see it.

Obviously somebody said “Make sure you are doing what God wants you to do–then do it with all your strength” but that person clearly was not George Washington. Until a source turns up for it, the saying will be anonymous and its author unknown.
