Keep Your Change

This is part of my Keep Your Change series! For more money-saving posts, click here!

This past weekend, I noticed that some great Kindle books are discounted right now on Amazon! Some of them have been on my wish list, some are by authors I love, and all look like they’d be really good! I haven’t read any of these – yet, but I have a few downloaded and ready to go. I just thought I’d share in case you’d like to snag a couple of these for yourself while they are on sale!

1. One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp
This book was recommended to me by Patty of Tales of Me and The Husband. I’m excited to check it out soon! The companion devotional is under $3.

2. Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs
I’ve heard good things about this book, but haven’t read it yet. I think it is kind of a marriage must-read.

3. Led by Faith by Immaculee Ilibagiza
I’ve read Immaculee’s book Left to Tell about surviving the Rwandan genocide and it was life-changing, so I’m sure this one is amazing, too!

4. Running for My Life: One Lost Boy’s Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games by Lopez Lomong
I ran across this book last week and was pleasantly surprised when I read that Lomong is a devout Catholic. I can’t wait to read about his journey!

5. Waking the Dead: The Glory of a Heart Fully Alive by John Eldredge
I loved Captivating and I’m a big John Eldredge fan, so I’m excited that this is discounted for the month of October. This will be good for my husband!

6. Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions by Lysa TerKeurst.
I love how Lysa writes! Her 60-day companion devotional is also majorly on sale right now.

7. What Women Fear: Walking in Faith that Transforms by Angie Smith
I have a good friend who recommended this book to me, and it has been sitting on my wish list. It’s probably about time I checked it out!

8. God Has a Plan for Your Life: The Discovery that Makes All the Difference by Charles F. Stanley
Anything that talks about God and having a plan for my life has my attention! I’m constantly on the look out for books like this!

9. Plan B: What Do You Do When God Doesn’t Show Up the Way You Thought He Would? by Pete Wilson
This sounds interesting to me. It would probably have some good insights to meditate on. I think we could all probably relate to this in one way or another.

10. Our Lady of Kibeho: Mary Speaks to the World from the Heart of Africa by Immaculee Ilibagiza
Another book by Immaculee under $5 – Awesome! According to the book description on Amazon, “Thirteen years before the bloody 1994 genocide that swept across Rwanda and left more than a million people dead, the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ appeared to eight young people in the remote village of Kibeho. Through these visionaries, Mary and Jesus warned of the looming holocaust, which they assured could be averted if Rwandans opened their hearts to God and embraced His love.” This definitely sounds intriguing!

These all sound so good! I don’t know which one to tackle first!! Not to mention, I already have quite a stack sitting on my shelf and downloaded on my Kindle!!

Have you read any of these books? If so, what did you think?

What I Learned about Love from My Grandparents

4 Oct

Last month, my grandparents celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary!

20131003-210447.jpgMy grandparents dancing at my wedding in 2005

When Adam, the girls, and I, took our annual fall trip to South Bend this past weekend, we visited my grandma and grandpa. This was the first time that I saw my grandmother in the nursing home that she moved into a few months ago – and the first time she didn’t remember who I was. We had such a nice visit, though, and she loved seeing her great-granddaughters, even though she didn’t realize who they were in relation to her!

My grandma has vascular dementia. My grandfather tried to take care of her as long as he could at their home, but it became too difficult, even with some in-home care.

20131003-210530.jpgMy grandma, grandpa, and me

During our visit in the nursing home that beautiful fall Friday morning, I was able to see what real, sacrificial love looks like.

Real love is…

…combing your wife’s hair when she can’t do it herself.
…picking out a pretty shade of pink nail polish so she can have her nails done.
…pushing your wife in a wheelchair while your great-grandkids dump acorns and leaves in her lap.
…holding hands while listening to the Swing Sisters provide musical entertainment for the residents.
…visiting twice a day every day because it’s so hard to be apart.

Acorn-dumping in progress! (Go Irish!)

My grandpa also shared with me this poem that he found in the newspaper.

    Alzheimer’s

Don’t ask me to remember,
Don’t try to make me understand.
Let me rest and know you’re with me,
Kiss my cheek and hold my hand.

I’m confused beyond your concept,
I am sad and sick and lost.
All I know is that I need you
To be with me at all cost.

Do not lose your patience with me,
Do not scold or curse or cry.
I can’t help the way I’m acting,
Can’t be different, though I try.

Just remember that I need you,
That the best of me is gone.
Please don’t fail to stand beside me!
Love me ’til my life is done.

-Unknown

Caring for a spouse with Alzheimer’s, may be one of the most selfless, loving things anyone can do.

My grandparents have been such a blessing in my life, and still are! If you have a moment, please offer a prayer for them! I’ll pray that all you married couples will enjoy 58 years together, too!

Varsity Catholic Missionary: Jennifer Risper {September’s Dreamer in the Spotlight}

27 Sep

20130924-195849.jpg

Most people who leave college after graduation, don’t plan to return to live on campus, but that is exactly what FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionaries do! This great ministry is bringing the new evangelization to over 80 college campuses in the United States.

I first heard about FOCUS a few months ago when my parents told me about meeting former Vanderbilt basketball player, Jennifer Risper, who was training to become part of the Varsity Catholic outreach program. Recently, the Tennessee Register published an article featuring her and a former teammate. After learning more about Jennifer and this great ministry, I knew I had to share what she is doing!

I wish that I would have been able to meet Jennifer in person before she left on her assignment to the University of Nebraska this fall, but I’m so grateful that she took the time to answer some questions about Varsity Catholic and her own faith journey. Please consider supporting her in this mission. I’ll list ways you can contribute at the end!

1. First of all, can you explain a little bit about the FOCUS ministry and how you reach out to college students?

I am actually working with Varsity Catholic, which is a division of FOCUS. This is a particular outreach to varsity student athletes. This ministry is very necessary and unique because of the role athletics plays in our society and on campus. Also, I played college basketball in college and professionally overseas so I can relate to the obstacles that college athletes go through in trying to grow in their faith.  It really requires a lot of time, a lot of love, and a lot of prayer. I desire and need to be fully available to the athletes because of their schedule. I need to meet them where they are in life and be sensitive to their struggles and their time. They really “don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

This past weekend I had some athletes over to my house and made appetizers for them. We played games, ate, and had great fellowship. I also invited our very cool priest who plays the guitar. There was a girl here who has no faith at all. Another girl is from Germany and Catholic but doesn’t know why. There was a non-denominational Christian who I went with to RCIA the night before. She wants to become Catholic. There were a couple Lutherans too! God really blessed our time together and I pray that He will continue to do more and more!

2. Looking back, what seeds do you think God planted in your heart earlier in your life to prepare you for what you are doing now with FOCUS?

Hmmm, well when I was in high school I went to a church camp and God became so real to me there. It was there that I gave up basketball because I realized God wasn’t #1 in my life, basketball was. I wanted Him to be my number 1 so I gave it to Him. That night He gave it back to me and told me He wanted to use me through it. That was the beginning for me in building my relationship with Him. It was also the start of learning how to give God glory through my sport. How to bring others into relationship with Him through my sport and sports in general.

I think God has given me a gift to talk to people and to relate to them. It is more natural for me to go up to someone and start a conversation and show interest in their life. I desire to love people and I know that is something that comes from God.

I think another seed was truly the graces I received at my baptism. There is so much grace through our baptism and I truly believe it helps us on our journey to sainthood.

Another seed would be my conversion to Catholicism. I am a revert to the faith but it was through a strong conversion. That conversion for me helped me seek and desire truth in everything. Truth in how I view and see the world, but in also how I see sin in my own life.

20130924-195835.jpg

Jennifer in Portugal

3. What advice do you have for others who are discerning God’s call for their own lives?

I think with discernment it is important to be truly honest with God in prayer. Tell Him the truth and the desires of your heart. I think it is also important to see WHAT you can do for the faith now. We were all created for a purpose and placed in this moment in time for a reason. I think often times people ask God “why?” but we should really ask God, “what?” What should I be doing with my life? What are ways I can bring glory to your name? What can I do to bring people into or back to your Holy Church? We are all called to evangelize those around us.

4. Do you have a favorite quote, song, or book that motivates and inspires you?

My favorite song right now is Lord of Lords by Brooke Fraser. I learned this song this past summer and fell in love with it. I first heard it during adoration and now every time I hear it I think of adoring Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. A quote that I love is by my patron, Saint Catherine of Siena “If you are who you should be, you will set the world on fire”.

20130924-195843.jpg

Jennifer’s official Varsity Catholic staff photo!

5. How can others contribute to your ministry?
People can definitely support me through their prayers! This mission wouldn’t be possible without the prayers of the faithful. When I don’t know what to do, or if I want to find peace, I find myself in the chapel with everything laid out before God asking and begging Him to hold my hand through it all.
As a first world missionary, this work requires me to be fully available to the student athletes that I am working with. In order to do that, I have to fund raise my entire salary including expenses, and student outreach. (sporting events, bible studies,  mission trips, retreats, whatever it takes to live and to complete this mission, etc) FOCUS likes to ask us to raise monthly support because it gives us stability month to month and helps us concentrate on the mission/job before us. One of the ways to support is electronically through my personal giving page.
Some people prefer mailing in their support. If anyone is interested in that, then they can contact me directly (jennifer.risper@focus.org) and I can give them all of the information that they need. Sometimes people may not be in a position to give, but they might know others who are and so even passing my contact information along is very helpful!
***

Jennifer, you are an inspiration to all of us! Thank you again for taking time to share about how God is using you to reach others!

I’m Giving Myself Permission to Slack!

20 Sep

bench2quote

It has been no secret that I’ve been slacking on the blogging front for the past two months! With car problems and the house for sale and all the stress that comes with that, my brain hasn’t had much room or time for inspiration and creativity!

But, you know what? I’m okay with that! I gave myself permission to let blogging slide down a little on the priority list. Sometimes, we need to let one of the balls that we are juggling drop temporarily, so that we can remain sane!

The other night, I had intended to finally have a nice evening dedicated to writing, but a newly scheduled showing threw those plans off, since I had to spend a couple hours cleaning the house for the following morning. I was exhausted since I had stayed up too late the night before (*ahem* shopping the clearance section online at Kohl’s), and had to scrap my plans on the computer and crash in my bed instead! I know, I know! This post could easily turn into a lesson on the importance of time management, but we’re focusing on cutting myself a break, right now!

The points is, we all take care of so much each and every day, especially those of us who have children! We can’t do everything great all at the same time! Most of the time, though, we do manage to hold our responsibilities together pretty well, but sometimes we just have to know when to say, “I need a break from this!”

And, if you are like me, you are your own worst critic. The pressure you feel to do A, B, C and X, Y, Z is largely self-imposed. We not only don’t want to let others down, but we don’t want to let ourselves down, either! We have goals and plans and we know that takes hard work and time, but we can lose joy and motivation fast if we don’t know when to recharge.

So, if you are under some extra stress lately or just feel overwhelmed by life’s daily challenges, I encourage you to find something you can let go of whether it’s for today, the week, or whenever, guilt-free! The dishes next to the sink may stack up a little higher, the grass may grow a little longer, or page views may dip a little lower, but if it keeps you healthy and from the edge of a breakdown, it’s well worth it! I give you permission!

Oh, and to follow-up on those car problems I mentioned before, I’m the proud new owner of a used Chrysler Town and Country! Nothing says, “I’m a mom and almost 30” like a mini-van! 🙂

Have a great weekend! Do something relaxing!

Catholic Woman’s Almanac {No. 1}

9 Sep

I’m trying something new this week! I’m joining the Catholic Woman’s Almanac Link-up Party at Suscipio. I just have to say that I’m loving this encouraging community that Jenny has created for Catholic women – very cool!

Thanking God for…
-my amazing husband who does so much to take care of our daughters and our house
-my girls playing together nicely in their little tent
-my oldest daughter, C, telling me that she loves me forever, after reading the classic Love You Forever tonight before bed!

Looking out my window…
I’m in the basement and there is a tiny window to my right. It’s pitch black outside- I can’t see a thing!

I am praying…
…that I can raise polite, grateful, respectful, faithful girls! I am praying that I have the courage to follow God’s will- whatever He may ask of me. I am praying that my husband has the courage to follow God’s will and is able to use his musical gifts to bring other closer to Him.

I am pondering…
…how do we know what is God’s will? Sometimes there’s a feeling that we’re certain is the Holy Spirit prompting us. Other times, this feeling could be the devil or us trying to convince ourselves that what we want is what God wants for us. Of course, there are certain things that we know God wants us to do or not to do, based on scripture, tradition, and teaching. But there are some gray areas that seem to have no apparent moral consequence one way or the other, like which car or house should I buy, where should I go to school, should I take this job offer, etc.? God is the master weaver, so obviously these decisions matter but it can be so hard to discern what to do sometimes… Just a little of what’s going on in my head!

I am reading…
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael E. Gaitley, MIC (the retreat is almost finished!)

Outlive Your Life: You Were Made to Make a Difference by Max Lucado

I am creating…
…the logo for my long-time project: Faithful Dreamers. I don’t want to share too much yet, but I can’t wait until it all comes together – slowly, but surely!

I’m learning…
How to better navigate GIMP (a free alternative to Photoshop)!

In the kitchen…
I made the best potato recipe from The Pioneer Woman this past week – Crash Hot Potatoes. They tasted so… amazing and they were super easy to make! Very addicting!

Around the house…
Well, if you’ve been following this blog at all the past two months, you know that my house is currently on the market, which means my house is the most organized and clean that it has ever been and I have to try to keep it that way! No easy task with two young ones!

I’m wearing…
…my favorite blue and lime green flannel pajama pants and an Eastern Illinois basketball t-shirt 🙂

Look what I found…
In the last few pages of 33 Days to Morning Glory, I discovered that the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception created two FREE iPhone apps – Mary and Divine Mercy. Check them out!

I am looking forward to…
…heading up to Indiana (my home state!) later this month! We’ll be staying with my in-laws, visiting my grandparents, and walking around the University of Notre Dame! We like to come up in the fall to take our annual family Christmas card picture on campus!

…going to bed in a few minutes!

What the Heck Has Adam Been Doing in Nashville These Past 11 Years?

6 Sep

I found one of Adam’s recordings from 2006 in my car the other week. It made me reflect on all of the ups and downs in Adam’s Nashville journey thus far. Mid-July actually marked eleven years since Adam moved south from Elkhart, Indiana at the age of 19 to pursue his dream.

While listening to this CD, I also realized that for more than half of the duration that I have been blogging (I started in May 2011), Adam has been on hiatus from his music career. Like, he RARELY gets on Facebook or Twitter anymore. He’s practically fallen off the face of the earth!

Many of you who have started following A Dreamer’s Wife in the past several months are probably like, “So, her husband is this dreamer musician guy, but what has he even done?!” Or, if you knew Adam in high school, you’re probably wondering, “Where the heck is Shick?” So, I’ve decided to put together a very rough timeline of Adam’s musical history since being in Tennessee.

Adam Shick’s Nashville Timeline

Photo Credit: Tommy Gravelle

July 2002

Adam moves to Nashville and shares a house with three other guys. Adam gets a couple of long-term full-time temp gigs to pay rent and the bills. Adam attends Nashville State Tech (now Nashville State Community College) for music technology. He quits after one semester because he doesn’t have enough money to continue with classes.

My attempt at being a “professional” photographer – ha! (2002)

2003

Adam rents a bedroom from a chronic smoker. He stuffs t-shirts under his door to limit inhalation! He lives here for the next couple years.

May 2003

Adam gets a job at Soundcheck rehearsal facility doing cartage (delivering, setting up, and picking up gear for session musicians at recording studios). Long story short, Adam met the owner a couple of years before moving to Nashville, because the father of the owner’s wife took organ lessons from Adam’s dad. Adam decided to follow-up on this contact after a temp job at Dell ended. It just so happened that someone was just fired that day for being drunk on the job! I think this was more than a coincidence!

It is shortly after this time that Adam becomes good friends and songwriting buddies with co-worker, Mark Hull. For the next seven years, they write together regularly.

Due to having a small staff at this time, Adam often works an average of six nights per week for the next couple years. This doesn’t leave much time for getting in the Nashville scene.

June 2005
Adam and Stef wedding

Adam marries me. 🙂

Later in 2005?

Adam auditions for Nashville Star – makes it past the first two rounds.

He also writes Make Your Way Back.

A song that opens doors with some of the industry professionals named later in this post.

April 2006

Adam is welcomed into the Catholic Church!

2006

Adam records some demos for Dean Sams of Lonestar. Dean introduces Adam to Glen Mitchell, a guitar player and aspiring artist. They hit it off and write a little bit, and Dean draws up contracts for him to produce them as a duo project. Nothing was signed by either party as this was a kind of manufactured arrangement and wasn’t really destined to work out.

Also, a session musician (who will remain nameless) who Adam met through Soundcheck takes an interest in producing Adam. He tries to get Adam and Jason Aldean’s three original band members together for a project. There is some mild interest, but Jason’s career takes off and the rest is history!

Fall 2007

adamemma

Adam gets a guitar gig with a young, aspiring country singer, Emma Jacob, through a referral by a Soundcheck client.

This gig lasted through 2011. During that time, Adam became production manager and band leader. He got to travel all over the country, do radio tours, and open for acts like Charlie Daniels and Jason Aldean.

Adam, Mark, my cousin Tommy, Mark’s childhood friend Mike, a guitar player, and a keyboard player create DoubleTake, an awesome 80’s cover band! Adam and Mark were both lead singers and guitar players who would each sing a song by whatever 80’s bands or artists they had on their set list. For example, Adam sang Bryan Adam’s Run To You and Mark sang Cuts Like a Knife or Adam would sing Foreigner’s Double Vision and Mark would sing Jukebox Hero.

20130719-221753.jpg

Here’s their promo video. (Thanks, Adam, for re-uploading it!) The plan was to do corporate parties, but this fizzled out for some reason and instead they pursued an original band so they wouldn’t have to worry about paying a keyboard player at downtown gigs anymore when nobody else was making any money!

2008

Adam quits working full-time at Soundcheck.

Longshot Rocket

Photo by Rick Malkin

Longshot Rocket is formed. It consists of some of the same members of DoubleTake. Adam and Mark alternate lead vocals and guitar. Brent Rowan (produced Joe Nichols, Julie Roberts, and Blake Shelton) becomes interested in Adam and Mark’s songs and their project. He questions the stability and longevity of the band. Thus…

The duo, 2AM, is born. Adam and Mark play acoustic sets around town, but yet again this project dies, too, when Mark chooses not to come out on the road to play some dates on the Nashville To You 2010 summer tour. Brent Rowan becomes busy with other projects and his interest fades when an attorney gets involved and tries to encourage 2AM to negotiate different percentages on publishing and what not. (Adam majorly regrets this, as he really wanted to work with Brent!)

Adam makes the decision to try to pursue a solo career.

Adam on tour

Adam plays and sings for Emma and also performs as a solo artist on the Nashville To You Campground and NASCAR Tours. On this tour he gets to know THE LiNE (on The Voice in 2012) and Jenn Bostic (April’s Dreamer in the Spotlight).

Here’s a video of Adam singing his original song, Liar, with THE LiNE on the tour.

Spring 2011

Little A Coming Home

Little A is born.

Adam is still a road musician at this time and supplements by working at a relative’s gold-buying store until the tour begins.

Adam gets a wake up call about his motivation as an artist when talking to an acquaintance in the music industry. He asks Adam, “What do you want to do with your music?” Adam responds, “Make money.” He’s pretty embarrassed by the answer, but at the time, we just had our second daughter and he was thinking about supporting his family, but this was a turning point in discovering his true motivation for pursuing music.

Fall 2011

Adam starts rehearsing new material with my cousin, Tommy, and his friend, Ed. They play a couple of shows, but due to lack of time and Adam’s continued struggle with finding his right purpose, he withdraws from trying to “make it” in the music industry.

Adam, Ed, and Tommy 2012
2012

Adam begins working full-time at Soundcheck again as an engineer for rehearsing acts. He decides to spend more time focusing on his own career, rather than go out on the road with another artist. He also wants to be home as much as possible with our family.

2013

Adam continues to write songs, mostly by himself. (He feels that not a lot of other musicians are on the same page spiritually and priority-wise.) This new material is hopeful, positive, and truthful.

Adam also sings demos and jingles for extra income. His voice is on the radio somewhere in the country singing about eye banks in South Dakota. Yes, eye banks! True Story!

Adam is focusing on raising our young daughters while working a full-time job. He has dreams of playing/speaking at men’s conferences and championing fatherhood. He feels the time is getting close to jump back into music, but he isn’t quite there yet! Adam truly enjoys and loves our family and I’m so thankful to have this man as my husband!

~

Whew! This post took a lot more time than I had anticipated!

Thanks for hanging in with us! I hope you enjoyed this time traveling down memory lane!

While browsing YouTube vids, I ran across this impromptu throwback of Adam doing a cover of Stormy Monday at a hotel room while on the road. I’ll let this close out the post!

Have a good weekend!

Five Favorite Preservative-Free Foods!

4 Sep

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

Linking up again with Hallie and several other fabulous girlies…

I have been trying to incorporate more organic foods into my diet, so I thought that I’d share my five favorite preservative-free foods this week!

{1}

Larabar

These are made with as few as two ingredients! For example, the Cashew Cookie bar is made of only dates and cashews!  These are so delish, and they are great to keep in my purse for whenever! This type of bar can also be made at home with a food processor. Check out Homemade Larabars.

{2}

Kettle Chips

I haven’t met a flavor that I didn’t like yet (although I still have many more to try)! My latest fave is Maple Bacon! These Kettle chips are made only with non-GMO ingredients!

{3}

Silk Pure Almond Dark Chocolate Almondmilk

Dark Chocolate Almondmilk

What more needs to be said? YUM!

{4}

Coconut Oil

Product Image

I’ve finally jumped on the coconut oil bandwagon and have started to discover all of the numerous uses for this awesome product! This will definitely continue to be a staple in my home!

{5}

Kashi Cereal

Package shot for Kashi® GOLEAN Crunch!® Honey Almond Flax Cereal

Many times after eating cereal, I’m hungry a short time later, but since this cereal has so much protein it keeps me full longer! The cereal pictured above is my favorite kind!

 ***

Do you have a favorite yummy, healthy food item?

I plan to do a Keep Your Change post soon about how to save money on organic foods, once I get more of a grip on it myself! Hopefully with so many people being more aware of what they are putting in their bodies, more companies will take notice! The coupon-er in me has a hard time spending more, but I feel so much better about what I am eating and what I am serving my family!

Tori Harris: Music Missionary {August’s Dreamer in the Spotlight}

30 Aug

tori harrisI am really excited to feature this month’s Dreamer in the Spotlight – Catholic musician, Tori Harris! This “music missionary for a new generation of faithful” is definitely using her gifts for God and inspiring others to do the same!

Over the weekend, Tori found time to answer some questions in the midst of speaking and singing at Immaculee Ilibagiza’s “Treasures of our Faith” retreat. (Side note: If you haven’t read Immaculee’s book, Left to Tell, about her experience during the Rwanda genocide, please do. It is a life-altering read!)

1. You released your beautiful EP, Adoremus, earlier this year. What does the rest of 2013 have in store for you and your music?
Thank you so much! This year has been such a whirlwind of blessings and surprises. It seems that everything is moving so quickly, it’s hard to keep up. I’ve got a few big media events happening in the Fall. National Worship Leader Magazine is featuring my song, “Face to Face” on their songDISCovery disk, I’ll be interviewed on Catholic TV at least 3 times, and there is a bunch of radio lining up. This summer I took a leap of faith and began playing music full-time, so, by the grace of God I’ll continue to stay on the road with a heavy tour schedule and this Fall, the hope is to take a few weeks off to go back into the studio and start putting together the next project. Over the past 2 years I’ve had the honor of writing with some INCREDIBLE songwriters and I can’t wait to give these songs some legs and watch how they do on a CD. But ultimately, providence determines what I’m doing and where the music is going. So, the hope is to do these things, but the reality is that, at all times, God is in control and I can only do that which He permits.
2. Since beginning your journey of pursuing Christian music for the New Evangelization, do you have a favorite “God-moment” that stands out?
That’s a hard question because there have been so many. One that really continues to teach and speak to me was this Easter. At the time I was really struggling to financially stay afloat and still do music, but I had a bunch of shows lined up and my only opportunity to earn money would be through CD and merchandise sales. I didn’t have any money for merchandise, so we charged the credit card. All in all, the expenses totaled about $2000. I had no plan for how I was going to pay off the debt, I was just confident that this was an investment I needed to make. A week later, just as I finish praying with my mom on the phone about where the money is going to come from, I met some friends for lunch. When I walked into the restaurant, there was a check for $2000 sitting on my plate. The wife of the couple looked at me and said, “Now what you see before you isn’t a gift from me, but from the Holy Spirit. I don’t know why you need this money, but I’m certain you need it. Jesus wants you to have it.” I held my composure through the lunch, but as soon as I got back to my car I wept for about 30 minutes. To be loved so lavishly by Christ touches one of the deepest longings of the human heart – and my God loves each of His creatures that much and more.

3. I love your guest post on Ryan Eggenberger.com where you shared your story of facing fear and discovering God’s purpose for you. Please elaborate on how you use fear and insecurity to guide you.
When I talk to young people I find myself repeating, “the battlefield for the soul is fought in the mind.” Extraordinary circumstances aside, the devil most often attacks us through our thoughts, especially the thoughts and stories we tell ourselves. Scripture is very clear that the emotions of fear, doubt, insecurity and anxiety are birthed in Hell and thus NOT from Heaven. When you apply this knowledge to the fact that the devil attacks that which is most Holy and most good – you quickly realize that if you are feeling doubt, fear, anxiety or insecurity, that you are likely in thought or action, doing something very good and very holy. You see, our God is SO good. He desires to pour into us the deepest desires of our heart. He has organized the universe very intentionally and very exactly so that He can present to us our hearts deepest desire. The devil knows this and can’t stop it. He can’t change the universe… but he can cloud our thoughts with lies. Lies of fear, insecurity, anxiety and doubt. When the devil does this, it isn’t the universe that ceases to move, but us. We cease to move. And when we cease to act, we cease to have faith, because what is faith but our RESPONSE to love. I’m learning again and again, that fear is affirmation that I’m doing something right, that I MUST keep moving. And every time I recognize it and walk forward, stepping into the fear, I watch as God’s perfect love casts it out, and another part of my soul heals, and I am able to know love just a little more intimately.
4. I read on your website that you give a 40-minute talk titled “Discerning God’s Call in Your Life.” What advice do you have for those of us who are searching for our passion and purpose?
I’ll give you discernment cliff notes:
1. Make a list of all the things you’re insecure about, all the things you’re afraid of. (I’ll never be thin enough, No one will ever marry me and I’ll end up alone, the ladies at church judge me and don’t want to spend any time with me)
2. Make a list of your hearts deepest desires. (This is the most difficult of all the steps. If you feel stupid, dumb, afraid and hope no one ever sees this list, then you’re doing it right)
3. Go through the second list, your heart’s deepest desires, and ask yourself “do any of these desires violate God’s law?” If it violates God’s law scratch it off the list.
4. Compare the two lists. If you see any parallels (For example, I am insecure about my singing voice and my deepest desire to stand on stage at Church and cantor) then prioritize those desires first
5. Act. Face your fear, step into your insecurity, and act. Follow the desire. Just do it.
6. Marvel at what God does next. Because what He will do will change your heart and life forever.

In the words of St. Teresa of Avila, “if you become only what God intended you to be, then you will set the world on fire” – I think it’s about time we had more souls setting the world on fire.

5. Do you have any favorite songs, verses, books, or movies that inspire and motivate you?
Good art and culture always inspire. The book that changed my life was “Abandonment to Divine Providence” by Jean Pierre de Caussade. I read and re-read that book and every time, the truth it contains etches itself more intimately upon my heart. If you’re afraid of making a radical change in your life, this is the book that will give you the courage to leave everything you know, take up your cross and follow Christ.
Thanks, Tori, for taking the time to share your journey and your wisdom with us! Great stuff!

Five Favorite Uses for White Vinegar!

19 Aug

Keep Your Change

I love cheap and simple solutions!

About a year ago, I discovered the awesomeness that is white vinegar! I buy this stuff by the gallons now, because I use it so much! Here are my five favorite uses for white vinegar!

{1}

pancakes

If you are making a recipe that calls for buttermilk, but don’t have buttermilk on hand, just add a little vinegar to regular milk! The pancakes that I make every Saturday morning are made this way and they are fluffy and delicious! I like to substitute wheat flour for half the flour and mix in chocolate chips!

{2}

spray bottle

White vinegar, water, and a squirt of dish soap in a spray bottle is my favorite go-to multi-purpose cleaner! It’s excellent for glass and stainless steel, especially when cleaning with a microfiber cloth! I have a poor sense of smell, so the vinegar doesn’t really bother me, but my husband can’t stand the smell! Fortunately, it dissipates quickly!

{3}

drain

Baking soda combined with white vinegar makes a great de-clogger and deodorizer for drains. Just poor some hot water in after!

{4}

fruit

One part vinegar and three parts water makes a good rinse to clean the dirt off produce.

{5}

weeds

I haven’t tried this one yet, but I’ve recently heard that white vinegar can be sprayed on weeds instead of using costly chemicals to kill them.

I know there are so many more uses for vinegar, and I’m discovering more all the time! It is definitely a must-have staple in my house!

Happy Tuesday!

{7 Quick Takes #11}

15 Aug

7 quick takes sm1 7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 228)

So it has been quite awhile since I have joined Jen and the 7 Quick Takes crew! I have so much randomness to share about what’s been going on in the Shick household so far this month that I thought breaking it down 7 Quick Takes-style would be good!

{1}

house

Our house is officially on the market! It’s exciting and highly stressful at the same time! Someone is coming later today to take video for a virtual tour thing and my house is going to have to be even more meticulously organized and spotless than it already is! Yikes! AND two showings are scheduled for this evening!

{2}

C started preschool earlier this week! She’ll be going two days per week. I felt like I climbed another step on the mom ladder when I made her lunch and packed it in her own cute brown and pink lunch box!

33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It- Yourself Retreat in Preparation for Marian Consecration

Last week, I started the 33 Days to Morning Glory retreat with several other Cathsorority ladies via Facebook. My mom had given me the book for Mother’s Day, but I hadn’t gotten around to checking it out yet, so it worked out perfectly to start this with a group! It’s going great so far!

{4}

With all of this crazy house stuff going on, I have gotten really behind with my coupon cutting – like at least 6 weeks worth of inserts piled up on me! I’ve been slowly tackling them this past week and now my least favorite part, filing them in my binder, awaits me! Fun times ahead for the weekend! 🙂

{5}

The beginning of August, Adam was gone as a tech at Lollapalooza in Chicago for nearly a week. It was the first time the girls had been away from him for such a long time! Daddy made some funny videos for the girls, which made it easier on me at bedtime! So, yeah, I kind of don’t miss the days of Adam being out on the road for 3-4 days at a time every weekend!

{6}

Changing the subject, I have a rare rant that I have to get off my chest! This week alone, I’ve been behind three different drivers who have tossed cigarette butts out their windows. I don’t know about anybody else, but anytime someone does that I feel like it is a personal “screw you!” I’m no environmental activist, but I feel it is so disrespectful to, like, the whole rest of the human population to litter. It’s not that hard to wait 10 minutes to throw your trash away or empty an ashtray!

I guess this is just a symptom of where our society is right now – selfish, no respect for life, etc…

Okay, rant over. Deep breath! Moving on…

On a happy note, I have to brag on my friend Abby of Creative Crumbs for a second! (You may remember that I featured her as my Dreamer in the Spotlight earlier this year.) She recently was invited to participate in Nashville’s first The NotWedding event at The Cannery Ballroom last month. Her delicious cake was called the “shining star of the reception” by one columnist!
