A Reading Break!

2 Aug

Since time is in extra short supply lately, I haven’t had as much time to write as I’d like, let alone read other blogs! So, I’m taking a little break this Friday to catch up on some posts from bloggers I love, like…

Patty, who just got back from World Youth Day with the Pope in Rio,

and

Stephanie, who just moved from Michigan to Florida on extremely short notice for her husband’s job while 38 weeks pregnant,

and

Olivia, who will be adjusting to her husband working every weekend while he attends classes starting this fall,

and

Stephanie, who is feeling blessed and joyful even though she just moved and a job opportunity fell through while she is six months pregnant!

If you don’t follow these ladies already, please check out their blogs! Also, check out the bottom of my site for more blogs that I love! I’m constantly updating my blogroll, as there are so many great people out there sharing amazing things!  And there are even more that I follow that aren’t listed below. Be sure to check back soon as there will likely be a few more additions!

Have a great weekend! Hopefully our house will be on the market in about a week!

Faux Granite Countertops with Acrylic Paints? Yup, I Did It!

30 Jul

DIY faux granite

I’ve been sharing recently about how Adam and I are getting our house ready to sell. One of the weak points of our house is the worn kitchen countertops. We’ve already put so much money into the rest of the house over the course of the past five years, that we decided that it isn’t worth it to replace the counters.

We didn’t want to give potential buyers an obvious reason to not consider the house, though, so I, somewhat impulsively, decided to update them in a kind of unconventional way. Thanks to several blog posts about painting faux granite countertops from other crafty individuals, like Tracy, Kelli, Kristi, and Kristy, who have done this rather successfully, I got up the courage to attempt this myself…

Before and After Faux Granite counters

Items Used:

-Painter’s tape
-1 Quart Kilz Primer (only used about 1/4 of it!)
-Foam brush
-4 inch foam roller
-4 inch paint tray (Nifty tip – line paint tray with foil , then throw away. No clean up!)
-Acrylic craft paint (I used 8 oz. black mixed with 2 oz. of Metallic black and 2 oz. gray and 2 oz. metallic bronze)
-Envirotex Lite (I used 40 oz. total)
-Small bucket/paint stirrer
-Large putty knife
-Plastic drop cloths/newspaper
-Vinyl gloves
-Plastic grocery bag and/or artist sponge(s)
-Paper plates

5 Steps to Faux Granite Countertops!

1. I taped off walls and the sink and primed the clean countertops with Kilz.

20130729-163024.jpg

2. I mixed 2 oz. of the Folk Art metallic black paint with 8 oz. of the black acrylic and rolled this color on as my base. I used a small foam brush to get around the sink and close to the walls. Prior to painting, I made sure to cover the cabinets with plastic drop cloths, which was especially important for step #4.

20130729-163036.jpg

3. Then, the fun part – sponging on the paint! Using a wadded-up plastic grocery bag, I lightly pounced the gray acrylic randomly over the surface. I then added black. I repeated this process with the same colors again. I started using an artist sponge with the black so it covered better. (I wanted a primarily black countertop with a marble-y look.) I used a small artist sponge and sparingly dabbed some of the metallic bronze paint. I used very little of the paint in this bottle. I sponged over all of the colors again with black and added a little more gray in some areas to add some contrast.

Giani Granite has some good tutorials on how to sponge on paint. I agree with them that adding on another layer while the previous color is still wet, gives the counters a more realistic, dimensional look.

20130729-163046.jpg

4. After letting the acrylic paint dry for at least an hour, I poured on the Envirotex Lite. I spread it over the countertops with a large putty knife. It was easier, and harder, than I thought to do this step. It was easier to spread than I thought, but it was harder to make sure every surface was covered evenly. I found a couple small patches near the walls that I had missed while doing this at 1:30 AM! This had to cure for at least 3 days before using. It’s also recommended not to set small appliances back on the countertops until after one week. We’re almost there! I can’t wait to have full functionality of my kitchen again!

This is definitely high gloss stuff! It brought out the colors and the subtle shimmer in the black paint instantly! I really love the overall look, but the high gloss emphasizes mistakes, too!

20130729-164015.jpg

5. After the sealer cured, I removed the painter’s tape. I had my husband help with a box cutter because the Envirotex made it difficult to remove the tape evenly. I mildly freaked out after the tape was removed, but after spending a couple hours touching up the walls with a little paint and a small brush, the finished product was MUCH better!

DIY Faux Countertops

Not a bad upgrade for a total cost of about $60! I bought the Envirotex at Michaels with a 40% off coupon. It typically runs about $30 for 32 oz. I also scored some of my acrylic paints at Michaels for 34 cents! They were on sale for half off last week! I probably could have spent less if we had already had some basic supplies on hand, but I needed a 4″ roller, plastic drop cloths, and vinyl gloves, etc. The gloves were a must! The Envirotex is sticky and it kept all the paint off my hands while sponging! I probably went through like five pairs during the whole process!

So, was I completely crazy to do this? At various times I thought I was, but overall I’m happy with how my countertops turned out!

A Family on a Mission {July’s Dreamer in the Spotlight: Melissa Seilhan}

26 Jul

I stumbled upon Melissa Seilhan’s blog, For Better or Worse, a couple months ago and immediately started going through several of her posts about her family’s journey to be missionaries! Talk about trusting in God! I knew that I had to feature her and her family!

Fortunately, Melissa agreed to answer some questions and share more about her experiences, faith, and blessings!

1. How did you find out about the Family Missions Company?

Several years ago, a friend gave me a book to read called Go, You Are Sent! by Genie Summers. The book tells the story of her husband’s overnight conversion from Atheist to devout Catholic and how they then sold everything to become missionaries for the Lord. Genie and her husband Frank later founded Family Missions Company to train other lay Catholics to do what they did. I read the book cover to cover in no time and longed for that kind of “blind” faith and simplistic lifestyle. My husband thought it was just plain crazy, but God had planted a seed and would later lead us right to Family Missions Company’s door.

2. What are some of the ways that God has let you and your family know that this journey is His will?

After reading the book, we began cleaning out our lives and began living more simply and more devoutly than before. I began homeschooling our kids a year or so later, and we began to do more corporal works of mercy in our local community and began reading about the lives of the saints. We began to have a missionary heart without knowing what exactly what was happening. That’s when God began sending Family Missions Company into our lives repeatedly. Everywhere we went we’d run into someone with FMC or someone that would tell about us something about this organization. We found out that FMC was the host of a very popular Middle School summer camp called Faith Camp and that they owned the retreat center that would be used for our parish youth retreat.

After my husband made a Cursillo, sitting next to an FMC missionary ALL weekend, we decided to check out their Wednesday night prayer meeting that we had been invited to several times before. After going a few times, our kids begged us to go on a mission trip. We eventually signed up to go on FMC’s Pentecost Trip to Mexico for a week instead of taking a family vacation that year. While there, we all began to feel the call to become full time missionaries.

As we began to pray about it after returning home, God continually confirmed this call through scripture like Luke 18:22 and Matthew 19:2. We’d open the Bible to similar passages over and over again. We’d go to Mass and the homilies we’d hear would confirm exactly what we’d just prayed about. Our daily meditation books and apps would constantly be about “Following Him and Proclaiming the Gospel to All Nations.” Passages that we had read and heard at Mass our whole lives began to jump out at us in a new way. We realized that “selling everything, giving to the poor, and following Him” was not just a suggestion or something for His apostles to do way back then. It was what He was literally calling us to do right now in this age.

Once we knew that we were indeed being called, we began to ask “How?” Then we began to get the scriptures about “trusting God to care for all your needs” in our personal prayer time, in our mediation books and apps, at prayer meetings—just about everywhere. But even though we knew what we were begin asked, we still hestitated and wanted more signs and bigger signs. That’s when someone randomly offered to buy our house and land without it even being for sale. After the initial shock wore off, we chalked it up to “coincidence.” So, He sent several more people the next week to randomly tells us they’d be interested in buying our house if we ever decided to sell it. That’s when we called our pastor!

We spent the next year continuing to pray personally and as a family for God to show us the path we needed to take. We sought spiritual direction from two other priests besides our pastor. The signs and wonders continued to appear and things just kept falling into to place too perfectly to be anything else but God’s work.

3. Last summer, you wrote a personal post on your blog about how using the “pill” nearly destroyed your marriage. That obviously took a lot of courage to share. How did that time in your life influence you and your husband’s decision to become foster parents?(Congratulations on the adoption of your son!)

That was the hardest blog I’ve ever written. It took several months to be able to actually click “Publish.” But I knew it was something that the Holy Spirit had been prompting me to write for a long time. The “pill” and later my husband’s vasectomy caused numerous problems in our marriage. We had both wanted a large family with lots of kids, but listened to the “world” and not our hearts when making several medical decisions when we faced difficult times. Even though we had confessed our sins and received absolution numerous times, we still had not forgiven ourselves even though God had. We constantly prayed for healing and for some way to feel whole again.

Like the recent signs leading us to missions, the Holy Spirit led us to become foster parents with numerous signs—people, books, movies, newspapers, and even a giant billboard. The more we prayed about it, the more signs He sent. But the one thing that kept holding us back from fostering were all the horror stories of these “bad” kids coming into your home and exposing your kids to who knows what. But God never stopped calling us, and we never stopped praying about the call. As we took the foster parent classes, we had to constantly remind ourselves that He knew what we could handle and what our three kids could handle. We just had to trust in Him completely.

4. What advice do you have for others who are trying to discern God’s calling for their life?

Be open! So many times in our lives we miss the opportunities that God puts in our path because we have made our own plans and are so set to follow our plan that we can’t see what he’s laying out in front of us. I used to be a major control freak. I like to have everything planned out and on the calendar ahead of time. I like to know all the details ahead of time before I make my decision. This does not work if you are following the promptings of the Holy Spirit! I have found that what I have planned usually is NOT what He has planned for me. This is very scary for me, but I had to learn to trust and be open to whatever is set before me at the moment.

We need to constantly pray for God’s will in our lives, not for Him to give us what we want or what we think we need. I promise that His plan is always so much better in the end even if it’s a lot harder than your plan. That’s one thing we’ve learned. He never asks us to do anything easy or comfortable. Everything seems hard and nearly impossible at first, but keep praying. And when you pray for His will, ask for signs and wonders. He is always faithful and will send them. You just have to have an open mind and heart to see them. They can be found in the strangest places—a commercial, an ad, social media status, random people. And if you’re stubborn like us, He may even send you a billboard of your very own.

Also, find a spiritual director, preferably a priest/pastor, that you can trust. Go to them, talk to them, have them pray for you, with you, and over you. And pray for them. Ask the Holy Spirit to give them the words that He wants you to hear. Many times our priests gave us the answers before we even asked the questions. If you are truly open to His will, He will not only reveal it to you, but give you what you need to follow it.

5. Do you have a favorite verse, song, or book that you turn to for inspiration and hope?

I have several favorites of each. The verse that really helped us change the way we viewed the world and the way we lived our life, the one that eventually led us to where we are now, is Romans 12:2. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” The less we conformed to the world, the better we were able to see His will.

But the verse that we rely on heavily lately is Philippians 4:13. “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” We cannot follow His will without His strength, and if He is calling you to something, He will not only give you the strength you need, but everything else you need also.My first “go to” song when life gets tough is “Lay It Down” by Needtobreathe. I’ve cried myself to sleep playing that song over and over at night. I play it softly when I just need some peace about something. And I blare it when I’m excited to be able to give it to God and be done with it! The other song that I go to often is Matt Maher’s “Lord, I Need You.” I could sing that all day and sometimes do.

Thanks, Melissa! You and your family are such an inspiration to all of us! I look forward to seeing how God continues to use you and bless you!

A Visit Down Memory Lane and Lessons Learned!

25 Jul

20130725-135148.jpg

Adam and me in 2002 – a few weeks before his move to Nashville. Back when Adam thought he was going to be going the country music route! Wow, how things change!

I’m happy to be guest posting over at Patty’s blog, Tales of Me and the Husband! Here’s a little teaser…

Tragically, in today’s society, so many couples think that if things aren’t always happy and easy, the marriage must not be meant to be and they quickly discard their vows. Newlywed Jacqueline Burkepile wrote a great post for Women of Grace earlier this month, titled Five Things No One Tells You About Marriage. In the article she discusses these points:
  • Love is not a feeling.
  • You don’t always have to agree.
  • Time with friends lessens after you’re married.
  • Quality time is important.
  • Selflessness is key.
All of these are very true and Jacqueline does a great job of expanding on them, so be sure to read her post! I have a few more truths that I’d like to add based on my own marriage experience…
Reminder- Don’t forget to check back here tomorrow to find out who is July’s Dreamer in the Spotlight!

Dear NFP, Let’s Be Honest.

23 Jul

rings

Dear Natural Family Planning,

Let’s be honest.

Sometimes I don’t like you. You frustrate me.

Like when I was so worried about getting pregnant right after the birth of my second daughter, that my husband and I didn’t get close, if you know what I mean, for about five months. Needless to say, this was not a fun time.

Or how my cycles have a very short infertile timeframe each month.

I hate how ignorant the majority of the medical community is about you. Sometimes it makes me feel embarrassed, like when the OB/GYN’s nurse asked me if you were like the Rhythm method. Or, even though my doctor knows I’m using you, she still tells me at my follow-up delivery appt. to use a condom until my period returns to make sure I don’t come back into her office with a surprise pregnancy.

But you know what, NFP? More than you (or rather, factors surrounding you i.e., my lack of knowledge, my body, others) frustrate me, I’m so thankful for you!

I feel blessed that my husband and I cherish and value the time we get together. I know that our odds for separation decrease significantly because we use you. I know that we’re being open to life if that is God’s will, even though we’re not trying to have another baby at this time.

I’m grateful that I’m not putting any life-destroying chemicals in my body that could also cause serious health complications and even my death. I am confident in knowing what’s normal for my body and would be able to detect any unusual changes or symptoms. I also know that if Adam and I feel that God is calling us to have another child in the future, it will be easier for us to achieve pregnancy. Thank you for being a method that embraces my femininity instead of trying to suppress it!

I’m thankful for people who have been able to develop methods using science and technology for more peace of mind. You are definitely not the rhythm method! I want to use you accurately (which, thanks to using the Marquette model, has been easier than ever), so that I can show people that you are good, smart, and 99% effective at avoiding pregancy. But as much as I want to do that, I’d know that a baby conceived during a typically infertile time would be a miracle and blessing from God.

I’ve been blessed with two beautiful little girls, who I can’t imagine my life without! Neither one was necessarily deliberately planned, especially the youngest due to a wonderful “mistake” on my part. (I should have waited the more conservative four days after peak day instead of three to assume Phase 3 – Thank the Lord, I didn’t!)

I wish more people were aware of, and open to, your goodness and benefits. God’s way is never easy, but it is certainly freeing! Thanks, NFP, for teaching my husband and I how to be more selfless.

With much appreciation and loyalty,

Stefanie

five-favorites-moxie-wife-1

This is going to be one quick Five Favorites post, but I’m happy to be joining Hallie and the other fabulous ladies who are linking-up! I’m in the middle of getting our house ready to go on the market, so time for blogging is in short supply right now! Here goes…

Edy’s Outshine Creamy Coconut Fruit Bars

Creamy Coconut

I wasn’t sure what I would think about coconut bars at first, but these are perfect on a hot summer day! Yum!

 The Cost of Discipleship

I’ve been a huge Dietrich Bonhoeffer fan ever since reading Eric Metaxas’ biography, Bonhoeffer, last year. I’ve just started to read this well-known book by Bonhoeffer, thanks to my dad who surprised me with it a few weeks ago! We’ll see how much time I actually have to read now that we’re busy getting our home ready to sell!

{3}

Prepare Your Home for Sale Checklist

I’m in the midst of de-cluttering, storing, and cleaning! I decided I better make sure I’m not forgetting anything, so I found this great checklist! It would work great for spring cleaning, too! Not that doing all of these things are my favorites, but I’m all about checklists!

 Noteshelf App

iPad Screenshot 4

I love this iPad app. It’s great for creating a variety of notebooks for all different purposes. You can type, draw, highlight, etc. I downloaded it when it was on sale for $1.99. Right now it costs $5.99, so you may want to wait for a sale. I haven’t used MagicalPad yet, but it seems to be pretty similar and is FREE!

Chicken Bow-Tie Pasta Salad

Chicken Bow-Tie Pasta Salad recipe

This is a Kraft recipe, but I actually didn’t use anything Kraft-brand to make it! (Boo Kraft! I’m not a big fan ever since I started trying to be more conscious of incorporating more preservative-free foods in my family’s diet.) My husband grilled a whole bunch of chicken breasts for me last week, so I used those in this great pasta dish! It’s really quick to make and can be eaten warm or cold. It’s a great summer meal or side dish!

Have a great week, everyone!

What if the Grass Isn’t Greener?

12 Jul

road stock photo

Have you ever read or heard something and felt like it was written or spoken just for you?

I had that experience yesterday morning when I opened up my daily 3 Things for Mom post in my inbox. Lisa Hendey was Thursday’s contributor and what she wrote in the first few paragraphs really resonated with me.

“Never leave one good party in search of another,” was one of the bits of wisdom my parents passed along to me before I left home for college. “The party down the hall isn’t any more fun than the one you’re already enjoying.”

My Mom and Daddy were always the life of any party, the first onto the dance floor and the last to leave it, the first to RSVP and the last to hug the host goodbye at the end of the night. Their wholesome “partying” is an example of the rest of their commitment to living life fully.

It turns out that this bit of wisdom works well for many of life’s other circumstances too: for career, for investments, and for marriage and family life.

Click here to read the rest of Lisa’s post.

The reason this spoke to me so much yesterday, is because Adam and I are contemplating putting our house on the market. An unexpected blessing this week nudged us to take this idea more seriously – and we are.

The thing is, though, that we are really happy. Life is good. We love our family. We know that we are blessed and despite some minor frustrations, like neighbors who park their cars in their yards, we are filled with joy everyday.

Adam and I are trying to be objective about this whole selling/buying thing. Ideally, it would be nice to live in a better, newer neighborhood where there are sidewalks for the girls, everyone keeps their yards properly maintained, and cars aren’t speeding by. Now is probably the time to buy before interest rates climb back to where they were.

So, the plan is to spruce the house up as quickly as possible and get it ready to list by the end of the month. We’ll see if we can get an offer that meets our bottom line. If not, we’ll probably just stay put, as we really aren’t under any pressure to move.

My worry, though, is that we’ll sell, and then not be able to find a house that meets our needs and wants in our price range. We also don’t want to be greedy, as if we are not grateful for the home that we have lived in for five years.

What if the grass isn’t greener on the other side? What if this party is better? When do you know if it’s better to stay put or if it’s time to step out in faith?

I’ll keep you posted… 🙂

Getting to Know… You {Temperament Link-Up}

6 Jul

Temperament Tuesday Link Up

I’m a little late to the Temperament Tuesday link-up with Olivia at To The Heights! Better late than never, though, right?!

I was behind in reading blogs this week and took some time Friday night to catch up, but didn’t get very far once I discovered this fun little party! I love personality tests and gaining insight into what makes people tick!

I’m already a big fan of the Enneagram – it consists of 9 personality types. I’m a Number 1 – The Reformer. It fits me pretty perfectly. My husband, Adam, is a Number 9 – The Peacemaker.

Anyway, for more about the four temperaments (Choleric, Melancholic, Sanguine, and Phlegmatic), why they matter, and to take the test yourself, read Olivia’s post!

I read The Temperament God Gave Your Kids last year. While reading, I also tried to think about what temperament(s) described me. The only one I was for sure able to rule out was the Sanguine temperament. I’m way too organized and introverted for that temperament! So, yeah, when I saw Olivia’s link-up about this test I got really excited about nailing down some answers- it’s the little things in life!

I took all of the different temperament tests that Olivia suggested and I got mixed results! One told me that I was a Choleric-Phlegmatic, and another said I was just Phlegmatic. So, I decided to buckle down and create a temporary CatholicMatch profile so I could access their temperament test. I actually wrote in the mandatory profile blurb that I was just joining for the personality test and I’m married and love my life! (I deleted my account when I was done!)

Back to the test, The first time I took it, I was a Melancholic-Phlegmatic, but it didn’t quite seem to fit, so then I took it again and it said I was a Melancholic-Choleric, so I think I’m a combo of the three, because just two of these together don’t completely seem to cover me!

I think the Melancholic/Choleric write-up on CatholicMatch describes me pretty well, overall, except that I’m not really that moody, untrusting, and easily discouraged. (The Phlegmatic side of me, is that I can be easy going when I need to be and I try to avoid conflict if at all possible!) Here’s what it says…

The melancholic-choleric is also a leader with the potential to accomplish great works. However, where the choleric-melancholic is driven by the challenge and the opportunity, the melancholic-choleric is inspired more by the nobility of the task. The introverted nature of the melancholic, combined with the focused and unempathic nature of the choleric, can result in an individual who is highly motivated by noble ideals (even humanitarian ones), but who prefers to work alone, rather than with people. The melancholic side of both temperament mixtures results in the project being organized, ethical, and high-minded, while the choleric aspect is the driving and demanding force.

If you are melancholic-choleric, you are somewhat less pragmatic (or utilitarian) than a pure choleric, just as persevering and determined, and with a greater emphasis on the ideal. Likely to be motivated by the most noble and demanding of causes, you are capable of founding a humanitarian society, composing a symphony, founding a school, or discovering a cure. You are organized, perfectionist, introspective, driven, and moody (though less so than a pure melancholic). You will be less active than a choleric-melancholic and less extraverted, more internally focused.

But your weaknesses include a tendency to excessive self-criticism and criticism of others, being dismissive or overly judgmental, exhibiting a tendency to self-absorption, and possessing an untrustful and controlling nature. You tend to be inflexible, can bear grudges for a long time and may be prone to discouragement. A melancholic-choleric who is not attentive to his spiritual life, and does not keep his eye assiduously on the truly important things of life can become a cross to those around him, through his nit-picking, perfectionism, disdain, bitterness, resentfulness, spitefulness when crossed, and even haughtiness.

I’m pretty sure Adam is a Phlegmatic/Sanguine or Sanguine/Phlegmatic. They both describe him pretty darn well, and I think he’d agree! Maybe I should have him make a temporary CatholicMatch profile so he can take the test, too! 🙂

Thanks, Olivia, for this fun and insightful opportunity! Considering I didn’t have time for my usual Friday morning post this week, being able to join this link-up was perfect!

Have a great weekend, everyone!
