While searching for Father’s Day ideas for my husband from our two little girls, I found some great printables that I’ll be holding on to for future years! Below are five of my favorite FREE Father’s Day printables that I stumbled upon online! (And since they’re free, this is a perfect post for my Keep Your Change series!)

Five Favorites: Tennessee-Style (vol. 8)

4 Jun

five-favorites-moxie-wife-1

It’s been three weeks since my last Five Favorites post, so I’m excited to be joining up again with Hallie and several other ladies! Inspired by my recent getaway to Gatlinburg, I decided to do a special Tennessee-themed post! It was hard to pick just five!

{1}

The Smoky Mountains

20130601-135800.jpg

It’s so nice to live only a 4-hour drive from these beautiful mountains! It had been six years since our last vacation to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, so it was nice to finally get back! Waking up to a gorgeous mountain view every morning was so peaceful, and much needed. I think we’re going to try to go annually from now on… we’ll see!

{2}

Nashville Skyline

Nashville Skyline photo: Nashville Skyline nashville.jpg

I never get tired of driving downtown, because I love the view, especially at night! The “Batman building” is iconic!

{3}

Sweet Tea

20130601-135219.jpg

Source

Of course sweet tea isn’t just a Tennessee thing, but there’s not a place you’ll go where you can’t order sweet tea down here! Being from northern Indiana, sweet tea was not something I grew up drinking! I’ve recently started making it myself instead of just buying it from the store.

I came across a great tip the other day! Add a pinch of baking soda to the boiling water and it will cut the bitterness of the tea and erase the cloudiness from adding sugar! YUM!

{4}

Nashville

Although Nashville is a little soap opera-y (entertaining for sure, though!), I have enjoyed watching the first season because it’s so fun to see all of the places around town that they feature. As I’ve mentioned before, Adam works at Soundcheck where they filmed a lot of scenes. The logo can be found in many episodes, too!

{5}

Crucifix at St. Joseph Church

20130602-111608.jpg

St. Joseph Church in Madison, TN is the parish that I attend. As you can see in the above picture, we have a gigantic crucifix behind the altar. It is so beautiful and awe-inspiring! This photo doesn’t do it justice!

Interestingly enough, when my family and I visited Nashville on vacation when I was in eighth grade, this was the church that we went to for Mass. Little did I know that I would move down here and attend this parish about seven years later!

I hope everyone is having a great week! Thanks for stopping by today!

Has It Really Been Two Years?!

17 May

hands

Today marks two years since I wrote my first post for A Dreamer’s Wife! Woohoo!

What a journey so far! Adam and I have both grown so much in our faith and trust in God! Those who have been following along since the beginning have witnessed how our dreams regarding Adam’s music career have been shaped and molded into aligning with what God wants. It’s been a fun ride so far and I believe it’s just going to keep getting more exciting! Adam will likely start to come out of hiding in the coming months! He’s been consumed (happily) with being a daddy and working, but he is starting to feel that the time is getting close to put an album together and get the official website up-and-running. I cannot wait to share his latest songs! I CANNOT WAIT! 🙂 I know that I am biased because he is my husband, but seriously, y’all! He’s so freakin’ amazing!

I’m also excited about all of the Dreamers’ stories that I’ve been able to share, and will continue to share each month! I’m so passionate about seeing others use their talents to make a difference in the world. I look forward to getting to know more dreamers and bloggers! There is definitely not a shortage!!

Speaking of dreamers, be sure to check out this month’s Dreamer in the Spotlight in two weeks! This entrepreneur will be sharing some great tips regarding the New Evangelization! Don’t miss it!

Something special about this week marking the anniversary of my blog, is that I was given a few awards all within the past few days by fellow bloggers! One of those is the Very Inspiring Blogger Award given to me by Cindy at The Veil of Chastity! If I could, I’d nominate her, as well, but I basically already did a few months ago!

Very Inspiring Blog Award

The rules of the blog award include:

1. Link back to the blogger who nominated you. (Done!)
2. Post the award image to your page. (Done!)
3. Share 7 facts about yourself – fun things, favorite things, humorous things, or things that inspire you.
4. Nominate up to 15 other blogs and invite them to participate. (This is the fun part for me!  And some of these are repeats of blogs that I have highlighted before! Like Cindy, I’m going to nominate 7!)

FUN FACTS ABOUT ME

1. I like to eat chocolate chip pancakes in stacks of three!
2. I love to read life-changing books!
3. My confirmation name is Bernadette.
4. In less than three months time, at the age of 21, I graduated college, got married, moved to another state, and found a job!
5. Even though I’ve lived in Tennessee for nearly 8 years, I’ll always feel like Indiana is home. GO IRISH!
6. I put on a comfy pair of flannel pajama pants as soon as I get home from work every evening!
7. I carry around a little notebook in my purse to scribble down ideas, quotes, etc. (Sometimes typing on an iPhone doesn’t cut it!)

BLOGGERS WHO INSPIRE ME!

1. Erin at Humble Handmaid One of the first blogs I started following! She keeps it real and writes great reflections!

2. Leanne at Life Happens When She’s inspired me with her journey of healthy eating and avoiding processed foods!

3. Stephanie at Captive the Heart – Cindy nominated her as well, but I have to give her a shout-out, too, because her blog is LOVELY!

4. Melissa at For Better or Worse – I recently came across Melissa’s blog via Catholic Bloggers Network. Her family is an absolutely AMAZING example of completely trusting God’s will IN ACTION!

5. Cecilia at Dance Immaculata – I featured Cecilia as one of my Dreamers last fall! Read this post to find out more about her!

6. Patty at Tales of Me and the Husband – Patty is a youth minister and a newlywed. I love her honest posts!

7. Stephanie at I Found Him Whom My Soul Loves – First of all, we have a lot in common, and second of all, her posts are beautiful and heart-felt!

~

Thanks to all who have followed my blog or have checked in with me now and then! I appreciate your support and encouragement! I love how we all inspire each other to be the best versions of ourselves! Have a great weekend, y’all!

P.S. I may take a tiny break next week from blogging, but I’ll be right back the following week for sure!

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

Another Tuesday is here, which means it’s time for another Five Favorites link-up with Hallie! If you haven’t joined yet, you should!

{1}

Catholic Underground is an event geared towards young adults that is active in some other big cities in the U.S. and even Europe! If you haven’t heard of it before, click here to read more about it!

Adam and I first heard about Nashville Catholic Underground through a friend who suggested Adam should play a show. Fortunately, we were able to go check it out this past Saturday! The evening began with Eucharistic adoration and ended with a concert in the basement of St. Mary of the Seven Sorrows, which is the oldest church still standing in Nashville! Adam is going to play a show when the new season starts up after the summer!

{2}

Buy the EP now!

Another cool part about making it out to Catholic Underground the other night, was that I met up with a fellow Nashvillian and Catholic musician, Tori Harris.  I ran across her blog last fall and recently saw that she released her EP at the beginning of this year. I saw this awesome article on EntreCatholic.com last week and mentioned it on Twitter, which led to a conversation about when we should meet-up. How convenient that Catholic Underground was the very next day?! Has to be a Godincidence, right?!

Be sure to check out Tori’s EP, Adoremus, which is available on iTunes! I got chills a couple times while listening in the car the other morning!

{3}

I love this eyebrow kit from Bare Escentuals! I never realized how much filled-in brows can really enhance your make-up look until I started using this powder a few years ago. It looks natural and very little product needs to be applied, which makes one jar last a very long time (like, years)!

{4}

Could this homemade scrub be any easier?! I made some as a gift for Mother’s Day. My hands felt very smooth after using it!

{5}

Dietrich Bonhoeffer Quote

 I absolutely love these words by Bonhoeffer! I used to just try to “be good.” Now, I’m really trying to listen to what God wants me to do. I’m continously growing every day and I live life with much more energy and purpose! For more of my favorite inspirational words of wisdom, click here!

Have a great rest of the week, everyone!

5 Ways I’ve Learned to Save on Baby Necessities!

5 May

Baby

It’s no secret that babies cost money, especially first borns! Fortunately, hand-me-downs can help lessen the blow financially when subsequent children come along! And, of course, breastfeeding and pumping saves a lot of money! As a mother of two little girls, I have learned some additional ways to cut costs and thought that I’d share! (I know that there are many savvy, domestically-talented women out there who probably have their own great ideas, so if you are one of them, please comment with your tips below!)

1. Diapers

Anybody who has had a baby knows that a box of diapers does not last long! I applaud cloth-diapering mommies out there, but I’m not one of them and I knew that my husband (who is with the girls quite a bit) would never consider it! For those of us who go the disposable route, I discovered an easy and usually less expensive option when my second daughter was born – Amazon Mom. I tried it when it when the program first started and it was great to be able to get diapers delivered straight to my door at 20% off! It was one less thing that we had to worry about running to the store to get! I was able to use Pampers on my daughter for the full first year because of the great price!  (My trial ran out after one year.)

2. Wipes

Just like diapers, wipes can be gone in a flash! Especially, on some of those 5+ wiper-diapers! You know, the real fun ones to change! Anyway, I have discovered since using coupons that there are a few times during the year when quality brand-name wipes can be bought for FREE when on sale with a coupon! At various times, Kroger has discounted Huggies and Pampers to $.99 with a Kroger’s Plus card. Combine that with a $.50 off one package coupon that doubles to $1.00, and that makes them FREE! The good news is that even when Huggies aren’t on sale, a coupon can bring the price down to $.99 for a package of 64-count wipes, which is still a pretty good deal! I always stock up on extra wipes coupons, especially when there is a sale!

Speaking of coupons, keep an eye out for diaper cream and baby wash coupons, as well, to avoid full price! Even better, use with a sale to pay a fraction of the price!

For more about shopping with coupons, click here!

3. Store-bought Baby Food

Wait, I know what you’re thinking! Isn’t it cheaper to make my own at home? Yes, and no. I’ll get to that one in number 4, though. In my experience, I have been able to buy organic baby food for as low as $.07 per jar! When you are able to pay as low as $.07, it’s definitely worth it to stock up on some jars for when you’re in a pinch and running low on homemade baby food! I once was able to get 18 jars for about $1.60!

It’s a good idea to join brand-name companies’ mailing lists, so you will get regular emails with printable coupons! Often, Coupon Network will have baby food coupons, as well.

4. Homemade Baby Food

Overall, making your baby’s own food is less expensive and healthier. Using in-season produce is ideal, because it is less expensive. It can seem overwhelming at times, though, when trying to make everything fresh, so I often blended cooked frozen veggies or canned fruit (in 100% juice) to make things more manageable when pressed for time.  BONUS: These things can also be bought at a reduced price with coupons!  The blended food can then be poured into ice cube trays and the frozen individual servings can be popped into freezer bags to save for future meals!

5. Frozen Treats

I mentioned my love for popsicle molds in a recent Five Favorites post. When eating canned fruit, I never wanted to waste the juice, so I’d pour it into a popsicle mold for another time. This is perfect for teething babies and toddlers! Who doesn’t like popsicles anyway?!

Another idea, is to buy a pack of kids’ yogurt when there’s a huge manager’s discount (or you have a sale/coupon)! Even though the expiration date is soon, you can stick spoons in each container and pop them in the freezer! Quick frozen yogurt pops! Be prepared for a mess, but it’s a fun treat!

Five Favorites, hosted at MoxieWife.com

It’s that time again! Another Five Favorites post with Hallie! Let’s get to it!

{1}

Catholic ABC’s

20130430-132448.jpg

I’ve mentioned this Catholic Preschool Curriculum created by Lacy Rabideau of Catholic Icing a couple times before on this blog, but I wanted to share it again. The Grotto craft pictured above is one of my favorites that we’ve done!  My three-year-old has really enjoyed this and we only have two letters left!

{2}

Captivating

I’m currently reading this book by John and Stasi Eldredge. I first heard about it when I interviewed the co-founders of Dignitas Magazine last summer. Captivating is such a great book about embracing our true femininity and beauty as women.

{3}

Jenn Bostic

Jenn Bostic- Jealous

Did you catch my special Dreamer in the Spotlight feature on this talented, genuine artist? Her story is so inspiring and so are her songs! Check out “Jealous of the Angels.” It has over a million views on YouTube!

{4}

Winning the Culture War

I love Lighthouse Catholic Media! My mom gets the CD’s every month and now she runs the program at our church. I recently listened to Winning the Culture War by Dr. Peter Kreeft. It was so spot on and so true! I think I said “Amen” out loud a few times while listening in my car!

{5}

Mint Chip Shake with Spinach!

20130430-132523.jpg

This Sneaky Healthy Mint Chip recipe has been making the rounds online and on Pinterest. I tried it out this past weekend substituting organic vanilla ice cream for protein powder or vanilla yogurt, and the girls and I both loved it. (Although, I overdid the peppermint extract a little bit!) I’ll definitely be putting spinach in my smoothies more often now. I need any trick I can use to get my two-year-old to eat her vegetables right now!

3 Easy Spring Activities for Kids!

23 Apr

20130422-161101.jpg

For most of us in the country, warmer weather has arrived! It’s time to break out the sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and sand! Sometimes, though, it’s nice to do something a little different than the usual go-to outdoor activities. After exploring Pinterest and some other fun ideas that I had bookmarked, my young girls and I spent some time doing the following three activities. BONUS: All of the items were things we had around the house (or printed out)!

{1}

Sidewalk Paint

20130422-164920.jpg

I found this idea for Liquid Sidewalk Chalk on Pinterest. This recipe is so simple.  Just mix 1 cup of water with 1 cup of cornstarch and then pour into muffin tins. Stir in food coloring.

Next time I will use a little more food coloring because our colors came out more pastel than vibrant once the girls started painting. I also don’t recommend using foam brushes, since they got torn up on the concrete!  This was a little messy for my 2-year-old, so it was bathtime afterwards! Her clothes washed up nicely, at least!

{2}

Toilet Paper Roll Butterflies

20130422-161127.jpg

I found how to make these cute little guys on Pinterest, too. The PDF template for these butterflies is available via Krafy Kid. Also, the site Kids Kubby showcases several different toilet paper roll craft activities. Who knew there were so many uses?!

I had to quickly take the picture above, since my youngest daughter was anxious to tear the eyes, antennaes, and wings off! At least they were cute for the few minutes that they lasted!

{3}

Nature Bracelets

20130422-161133.jpg

This nature bracelet is so simple! Just wrap a piece of packing tape around your kid’s wrist, sticky-side out. Then, let them loose around the backyard or the park to find flowers, leaves, etc.! This would be fun to do in the fall, too!

What is one of your family’s favorite activities?

Five Favorites vol. 5

Another week of my latest five faves with Hallie of Moxie Wife!

{1}

Draw Something

iPhone Screenshot 3

So, yeah, I’m a little obsessed with this app right now, thanks to my sister-in-law. Not only is it fun to guess others’ drawings and draw for others, but it has been a great way to keep connected with long-distance family members! Sometimes we need to text each other for hints, because some of us (ahem) aren’t the best drawers in the world! I use the free version, which includes ads, but there is also a paid version available without ads.

{2}

The Children’s Place Slim Utility Pants

I have had trouble finding pants that don’t hang off of my soon-to-be four year old daughter. So I was excited when I bought her a pair of slim pants online and they fit her perfectly! The utility pants pictured above can also be cuffed and buttoned to make capris!

{3}

Popsicle Molds

I recently bought the Tovolo Groovy Ice Pop Molds to replace the nice Tupperware set that my mom passed down to me, because we accidentally threw a few of the reusable handles in the trash! I love making inexpensive, healthy frozen treats for the girls. Plus, it keeps them busy and quiet for a few minutes!

{4}

The Best Chocolate Cake Recipe EVER!

Adam’s 29th birthday cake by Creative Crumbs

Seriously, don’t look any further for your go-to chocolate cake recipe, because there is no need! My friend, Abby Head, of Creative Crumbs shared this, and everybody who has tasted this cake says it is amazing! She used this recipe for the football/music cake above!

{5}

Coral Nailpolish

20130416-144137.jpg

Tropix + Iced Coral Layers of CND Shellac

When the weather gets warmer, I’m always ready to brighten up my nailpolish!  I’m loving this combination of colors to create a fun, shimmery coral shade!  Now, if I can just figure out how to better manage my cuticles!

Five Favorites (vol. 3)

25 Mar

It’s time for another Five Favorites post with Hallie of Moxie Wife!  Hallie’s little one is (over)due any minute, so now she’ll have six favorite sweet peas, instead of just five!  Thanks to Jen @ Conversion Diary for filling in this week!

Here are my latest faves!

{1}

fwisty

clutch-tote collage

If you read my Dreamer in the Spotlight post the other Friday, you already know all about my friend Kristen’s handmade accessory line, fwisty.  I just love her choice of fabric patterns and colors!  She’s offering 10% off orders with the code dreamer!

{2}

I started shopping at Publix when I began using coupons because they always have so many BOGO deals!  It’s a nice bonus that all of the employees are super friendly and helpful!  I just found out that Publix now offers digital coupons in addition to printable coupons!  So if you have a Publix in your area, be sure to sign-up!  (Please note, though, that their digital coupons do not double like regular coupons.)

{3}

Easy homemade gift!

Cookie Jar Housewarming gift

I needed a gift to take to my cousin’s housewarming party the other weekend, so of course I checked out Pinterest for some ideas and found this one!  I bought the glass cookie jar for $10 at Target and made some homemade chocolate chip cookies and tied a little tag with some pretty wired ribbon!  It’s so simple, but the presentation makes it very classy!  I’m definitely using this in the future!

{4}

More 2 Life

My husband is addicted to listening to podcasts, so I guess it’s about time that I got on board, too.  I ran across More 2 Life radio on someone else’s Five Favorites post a couple weeks ago and decided to check it out.  This radio show features Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak and is based on the Theology of the Body.  I really like it and have been listening to the podcasts while working at my desk.

{5}

Jeff Pinyan’s words about heaven.

(He wrote the paragraph below the following Q & A text from YOUCAT as part of Read the Catechism in a Year: Day 147)

Question 158: What is heaven?

Heaven is the endless moment of love. Nothing more separates us from God, whom our soul loves and has sought our whole life long. Together with all the angels and saints we will be able to rejoice forever in and with God.

If you have ever observed a couple looking at each other lovingly or seen a baby nursing who looks for his mother’s eyes as though it wanted to store up every smile forever, then you have some inkling of heaven. To be able to see God face to face—that is like one, single, never-ending moment of love.

Isn’t that absolutely beautiful?

Coupon Basics {Keep Your Change vol. 1}

Coupon Basics

I’m excited to be debuting my new Keep Your Change series today! Since, I’ll likely be referring to coupons again and again, I figured that I’d begin with some helpful tips for those who are looking to trim down their budgets by shopping smarter with coupons! Of course, there are several books and blogs dedicated to this, so I’ll just offer a little introduction and link to some of these helpful resources below.

I became serious about using coupons when my second daughter was born. Around this same time, the TLC show, Extreme Couponing debuted. At first I was skeptical of how people could actually save that much money using coupons, but once I saw massive grocery totals being dwindled to under $20, I thought that there must be something to this!  After being on bed rest for two months, starting maternity leave, and facing mega hospital bills, I was desperate to figure out a way to save my family more money.

When I did my first Google search, I ran across the site TheKrazyCouponLady.com.  This is where I had some basic beginner’s questions answered and learned how to put a coupon binder together.  I also bought the founders’ book, Pick Another Checkout Lane, Honey. I’m so glad that I did, because the authors did a great job of making this whole coupon thing seem so much simpler and it was also a fun, easy read!  If you are serious about changing the way you shop, I highly recommend it!

It has been nearly two years since I totally revamped how I approach grocery shopping.  Each week, I check out blogs for sale-coupon match-ups. My favorites right now are I Heart Kroger and Southern Savers.  I also like Faithful Provisions.  Depending on what region of the country you live in, there will probably be other coupon blogs that may be more helpful for you.  The key to saving money is using coupons with a sale – and using multiple coupons so you can stockpile to avoid paying full-price in the future.

Couponers have different ways that they get their hands on extra coupons.  At first, I bought 2 Sunday papers each week and my parents’ gave me their coupons so I could get multiple items at a discount.  Now, I get one paper and pay a handling fee for extra coupons online that I know I will use if a good deal comes along.  I use CouponDede.com.  I don’t always find the coupons that I want, but most of the time I am able to order what I need.  Printable coupons are also another great way to get your hands on a few more deals at a major discount.  Here are some great sites:

Coupons.com
Smartsource.com (Smartsource also has an app for the iPad now.)
Redplum.com
Couponnetwork.com
Target.com (Great place to find several Target store coupons to match with manufacturer’s coupons.)
Kroger.com (You can add digital coupons to your Kroger Plus card.)

Disclaimer:  I do not advocate clearing shelves as glorified on Extreme Couponing.  I think there needs to be a level of respect for others who are also trying to save money.  I consider what I do to be “Strategic Couponing.”   Remember, though, that rain checks on sold-out items can guarantee that you can still get products at the sale price and still use your coupons as long as they haven’t expired yet.

When I first started out, I wanted to catch every great deal at every store, but since then I have found that is a major sanity-saver to focus on 2-3 stores.  The ones that I stick to are Kroger, Publix, and sometimes Walgreens.  Kroger and Publix double coupons up to 50 cents, which means that a $.50 coupon is actually worth $1!  All three of these stores also let you use a store coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon for the same item.

I know that jumping into the world of coupons can seem overwhelming. And I’m not going to lie, it really feels like another part-time, even full-time, job at first. But after a couple months of seeing prices, sale cycles, etc., and finding a coupon organizing system that works, it will be much more manageable on a practical level.

It still requires time each week to cut and file coupons, study match-ups, and write up lists, but it has become a normal part of my routine. I don’t make excel spreadsheets to compare store prices or have piles of coupon inserts in my closet, but I still am benefiting greatly from planning grocery trips around coupons and sales! I have gotten a variety of products for free, or just pennies, and it feels great to be able to provide for my family in this way!  I can’t imagine shopping any other way and I am still learning about new ways to save!

If you are considering starting on this journey of couponing, good luck and get ready to enjoy your savings!  Feel free to ask any questions!

For those of you who already use coupons, what are your favorite tips? Also, have you tried the Ibotta app?  I have it downloaded but haven’t used it yet… Thoughts?
